“so is it bittersweet that you’re leaving and not getting the job that you wanted?”

I worked for boutique fitness gym in Chicago. They prided themselves on being focused on “women’s health” and “celebrating the differences that make us beautiful” in their mantra. They usually do not pay their front desk employees, but I decided to stick it out and hopefully with hard work and dedication I could get into being a paid employee.
I put in the time and after 1 full year, I ended up getting paid as their staff. After that, I was promoted to being a studio manager. Low and behold, I got pregnant. I worked my butt off and even the owners were pleased with my work. I worked hard enough that they were not pleased with other management and wanted to restructure. I sat down with one of them and after some talking- they decided that I could not handle the pressure and hours of working at their gym. One of the owners exact words were – “so is it bittersweet that you’re leaving and not getting the job that you wanted?”
Ugh. Its not worth fighting against. I knew that I was going to have my baby in 2 weeks and when I did seek counsel from my “friends” at that place, they had their own interests in the company. I left and they offered me to work a few hours a week for free again in exchange for a free membership. Yeah, no thanks. I’ll go to a place that at least celebrates women by offering childcare.
