In my mid 20’s, I mentioned to my (childless, female) supervisor that my husband and I were thinking about having a baby the next year. Since another co-worker had just had a baby, I figured she would be okay with it. Nope. Within two months, I couldn’t do anything right in her eyes and was fired. She didn’t want another person out on paid leave.
Ten years later, in a totally different field, I became pregnant unexpectedly. My boss (another childless woman) hugged me and said “We have your back.” Then she counted every one of my (normal) weekly days off against my 8 weeks of (unpaid) maternity leave, and five weeks after my daughter was born, sent me a letter saying that I had been fired for “job abandonment.” (It was retaliation because I had reported the company for making us work through lunch breaks without pay…”You still have to clock out and back in, but I need you to work”)
